Massachusetts or Maine Merganser Drake Decoy, circa 1900

Price: $1,425.00

Early Massachusetts or Maine Red-Breasted Merganser Drake Decoy, circa 1900, in old working paint, having a slender racy head with tack eyes and a slightly snaky neck, set with flared base firmly onto the body; the body itself also has a somewhat racy form, with ridged back, and large barn spike set into bottom and bent over as a keel. The paint on the head may be original, while that on the neck and body is clearly working paint done long ago in a style usually attributed to Indians with a broad bold white wing patch, and dots high on the back and chest. The maker carved a primitive Y-shaped groove on the back to give some lift and definition to the wings. Nice touch. There are a few very tight age checks to the wood on the back and breast. and the start of a broad splinter on the bottom, but all stable and all underneath the paint. There is a nail line tie on the bottom, and a few other nail holes where former line ties or a weight may have been attached; there might possibly be one or two shot scars hiding under the paint as well. An beautiful early gunning decoy with sleek lines... a classy little merganser indeed.

Measures: 6.25 in H x 14.75 in L x 5 in W
