19th Century Carved and Painted Ship's Billet Head
19th century carved and painted ship's billet head from the Schooner Ann Edmonds. Beautifully carved acanthus leaf scrolls, in old working paint with much of the original paint intact. In very good condition for its age and use. Retaining an old collection label on the reverse (see photo) inscribed "Billet head from the schooner 'Ann Edmonds' 1874." As the 19th century wore own ship owners were watching the bottom line and became less inclined to pay for elaborately carved full figureheads. The advent of the slender clipper bow also made it undesirable to mount the extra weight of a large figurehead under the bowsprit. The answer to these trends was the diminutive Billet Head, a beautiful adornment yet still light and economical.
