“Nantucket Harvest” Watercolor by Lucien Van Vyve, 1960
“Nantucket Harvest” by Lucien Van Vyve, 1960, an en grisaille watercolor on paper modernist painting of two fishermen on deck loading a basket of fish, with gear, rigging and reflective water in background, signed and dated in the lower right and titled on the reverse. The painting has sepia coloring as occasional highlighting. Lucien Van Vyve was the acclaimed chef of the iconic Nantucket Opera House Restaurant in the 1960s and 70s. He was also celebrated for his sketches and artwork, including the illustrations for the Opera House owner Gwen Gaillaird’s cookbook "Recipes, With Love". This is an extremely rare subject for Van Vyve. The painting is in very good, perhaps excellent condition; there is what might be a water stain down the right side, but it exactly matches the sepia tone highlights applied throughout. The painting needs a fresh mat.
