19th Century Sailor’s Folk Art Woolie, circa 1880
19th century Sailor’s Folk Art woolie, circa 1880, depicting two fishing smacks (and a third in the background), sailing under a very dramatic sky. This hand embroidered woolwork picture is very unusual not only in its subject matter (most woolies depict naval ships), but also in its use of several black, white and clear seed beads as blocks in the rigging. In very good condition with just a speck or two of wool loss. The period frame is likewise in very good condition, likely repainted and gilded quite some time ago.
