Late 19th Century Folk Art Fisherman's Rope Eel Basket - SOLD

Price: $895.00

Late 19th Century Fisherman's Rope Woven Eel Basket, circa 1890, a rare hand woven basket apparently unique to the New Jersey coast, with a coarse rope weave on twig staves, with solid wooden bottom, and rope becket handles. These baskets were used to carry live eels (and probably other live bait) for fishing. Only a few of these have been spotted over a lifetime in antiques.

The basket is in remarkable condition. The bottom plate and twig staves are of course dry and weathered. The rope weave and becket handles are in superb, strong condition. There is space between two rows of weave from lifting the basket there over the years. One loop of rope has come out of the weave, next to two "bitter ends" of rope strands.
