Early 19th Century Naturalist or Collectors Specimen Cabinet
Early 19th century Gentleman Naturalist or Collector's Specimen cabinet, made of pine in old red stain, with ebonized knobs, having six drawers, each fitted with 81 compartments, raised on simple bracket feet. It was very common for gentlemen in the 18th and 19th centuries to pursue studies as amateur naturalists, collecting rocks, shells, butterflies and other insects, or whatever intrigued their imagination. This cabinet is an excellent example, capable of holding a very large collection of specimens, coins or stamps, worthy of Darwin himself. In very good condition, with a deep warm patina that bears witness to its age.
